Why Do We Sometimes Mistake Complexity for Depth?

Imagine hearing two people explain the same idea. The first uses technical vocabulary, long sentences, several abstract concepts, and an explanation that requires considerable concentration to follow. The second expresses the central idea in three ordinary sentences. Which person sounds more knowledgeable? We may want to say that we would judge only the quality of their reasoning, but presentation can influence us. Complexity can look like evidence that something important is happening underneath, while simplicity can sometimes be mistaken for a lack of depth.

This happens far beyond academic or professional settings. A complicated explanation can make advice sound more sophisticated. A person who speaks at length about their emotions may seem more self-aware than someone who describes the same experience simply. A difficult book can feel more intellectually substantial than an accessible one. Technical language can make an ordinary observation sound specialized, while a clear explanation of a genuinely complicated subject can appear almost too easy.

Yet complexity and depth are not the same property. Something can be complicated because the subject genuinely contains many interacting parts. It can also be complicated because the explanation is poorly organized. Something can be simple because very little thought went into it, but it can also be simple because considerable thought was required to identify what actually matters.

The useful question is therefore not whether simple communication is better than complex communication. It is how we distinguish necessary complexity from complexity that merely looks impressive—and genuine simplicity from an explanation that has removed so much that it becomes misleading.

Difficulty Can Feel Like Evidence That Something Is Valuable

When understanding something requires effort, that effort is noticeable. We have to slow down, reread a sentence, remember an earlier point, look up an unfamiliar word, or hold several ideas in mind at once. Because we can feel ourselves working, it is easy to connect the effort with the quality of the material: If this is difficult for me to understand, perhaps it must be sophisticated.

Sometimes that conclusion is justified. Quantum physics should not be expected to become completely understandable in three casual sentences. A legal agreement may require distinctions that cannot responsibly be compressed into a slogan. A complicated medical decision may involve probabilities, trade-offs, limitations, and uncertainty that deserve careful explanation.

But difficulty alone cannot tell us whether complexity is necessary. A poorly written instruction manual can be difficult to understand even when the machine itself is simple. A speaker can make an ordinary concept sound complicated by introducing unnecessary terminology. A long explanation can contain fewer useful ideas than a short one.

The effort required from the audience therefore tells us something about the experience of receiving the information, but not necessarily about the quality of the thinking that produced it.

Simple and Simplistic Are Not the Same Thing

This distinction is essential because simplicity can go wrong too. Suppose someone explains a complicated relationship conflict by saying, “If they cared, they would know what you need.” The sentence is simple and memorable, but it removes communication, individual differences, context, misunderstanding, competing responsibilities, and the fact that people cannot reliably infer everything another person needs.

That is not useful simplicity. It is simplification that removes information necessary to understand the problem.

A genuinely simple explanation does something different. It reduces unnecessary complication while preserving the distinctions that matter. It might say, “Caring about someone does not guarantee knowing what they need; some needs have to be communicated.” The sentence remains accessible, but it does not require us to pretend that human relationships operate according to a single rule.

The difference is not the number of words. It is what was lost when the idea became shorter.

Sometimes Understanding More Allows Us to Say Less

When we first learn about a subject, everything can seem equally important. We collect terminology, exceptions, examples, details, and explanations without yet knowing which pieces are central. If someone asks us to explain the subject, we may try to include almost everything we know because we have not yet developed a clear hierarchy of importance.

With greater understanding, that hierarchy can become easier to see. We begin distinguishing the central mechanism from supporting details, the general rule from the exception, and the information a beginner needs from the information that can wait until later. A shorter explanation can then become possible not because we know less, but because we have become better at selecting.

This is why some of the clearest explanations come from people who understand not only the subject but also which part of it answers the question being asked. They are not displaying everything they know. They are choosing what the listener needs.

Jargon Can Be Necessary Without Being Proof of Expertise

Specialized vocabulary exists for good reasons. In many fields, one technical term can replace an entire paragraph because people working in that field share a precise definition. Removing every specialized term would sometimes make communication longer and less accurate rather than clearer.

The problem begins when we treat the presence of specialized vocabulary as evidence that the speaker understands the subject. Knowing the terminology of a field and understanding the relationships between its ideas are not identical abilities. Someone can repeat sophisticated words without being able to explain what they mean, when they apply, or what would count as an exception.

A useful test is not whether a person can avoid technical language completely, but whether they can connect that language to understandable meaning. If a technical term is necessary, can they explain it? Can they give an example? Can they distinguish it from a similar concept? Can they say what the term does not mean?

Complex vocabulary becomes useful when it increases precision. When it merely increases distance between the speaker and the listener, it may create an impression of expertise without necessarily improving understanding.

Longer Explanations Can Feel More Complete Even When They Are Repetitive

Length creates another illusion. If one person answers a question in two paragraphs and another answers it in two pages, the longer response can feel as though it contains more substance simply because there is more language to process.

Sometimes it does. Complicated questions deserve detailed answers. Examples, qualifications, alternative explanations, and exceptions can add real value. But length can also come from repeating the same point with different wording, adding examples that do not change the conclusion, or expanding an idea without increasing its precision.

This is particularly difficult to notice when the writing sounds polished. We may finish a long explanation feeling that we encountered something substantial even if we would struggle to identify more than one or two actual claims.

A useful question after reading or hearing an explanation is therefore: What do I understand now that I did not understand before? If we can identify several meaningful distinctions, the length may have served a purpose. If we can only repeat the opening claim, much of the complexity may have been decorative.

We Can Confuse an Impressive Explanation With an Explanatory One

An explanation should reduce some uncertainty. It should help us understand why something happened, how something works, what distinguishes one possibility from another, or what evidence supports a conclusion. Yet some explanations create the feeling of understanding without giving us much we could actually use.

Imagine asking why a particular strategy failed and receiving a response filled with abstract language about optimization, alignment, dynamic systems, strategic architecture, and multidimensional processes. The answer may sound sophisticated. But if we still cannot identify what specifically went wrong, which decision contributed to the failure, or what should change next time, the explanation has not necessarily done much explanatory work.

Replacing the vocabulary with ordinary language can sometimes reveal this. If the central claim becomes difficult to identify once the impressive terms disappear, the complexity may have been carrying more of the impression than the reasoning.

Simple Language Can Make an Idea Look More Obvious Than It Really Is

There is an opposite illusion too. Once a difficult idea has been expressed clearly, it can seem as though anyone could have thought of it.

A concise explanation hides the discarded versions that came before it. We do not see the failed attempts, irrelevant details, competing interpretations, or hours spent deciding what matters. We see only the finished sentence.

This happens with good design as well. A clean interface can look obvious after someone has decided what to remove, where everything belongs, and which actions deserve prominence. A useful framework can look simple after someone has separated the important variables from dozens of less useful ones. A clear piece of writing can appear effortless after extensive revision.

The simplicity of the result therefore tells us very little about the amount of thinking required to produce it.

Emotional Depth Is Not Measured by How Complicated Someone Sounds

The same confusion can appear when we judge people rather than explanations. Someone who analyzes every emotion extensively may appear deeply reflective, while someone who says, “I was hurt, but I understand why they made that choice,” may appear less psychologically complex.

But verbal elaboration and emotional depth are not interchangeable. People differ in how much they enjoy analyzing their internal experiences, how easily they translate feelings into language, how much detail they share with others, and how much explanation they believe a situation requires.

A short statement can contain an important distinction. “I understand why they did it, but it still hurt” simultaneously holds explanation and emotional impact without forcing one to erase the other. It is linguistically simple while psychologically nuanced.

Conversely, a very elaborate description of an emotional experience does not automatically mean the person understands it accurately. More interpretation can sometimes produce more possibilities rather than more clarity.

Humor and Lightness Can Carry Serious Understanding

The original idea behind “lightness doesn’t mean shallow” becomes especially useful here. People sometimes use humor, ordinary language, or a relaxed conversational style while discussing things they understand very well. Their delivery may not signal seriousness in the conventional way, but seriousness of presentation and seriousness of thought are different things.

A teacher can make a difficult concept funny without making it inaccurate. A person can tell a light story about a mistake while having learned something substantial from it. Friends can discuss an important issue without adopting solemn voices for the entire conversation. Humor can coexist with precision, grief, insight, disagreement, or care.

Of course, humor can also be used to avoid a subject or dismiss something important. Again, the form alone does not tell us what function it serves. The relevant question is what remains underneath the lightness. Is the person still able to engage with the important parts of the subject, or does humor continually replace them?

Seriousness Can Also Be Performed

Just as lightness can contain depth, seriousness can sometimes create an appearance of depth. A solemn tone, abstract vocabulary, long pauses, complicated metaphors, or highly formal language can make a statement feel important before we have evaluated what it actually says.

This does not mean serious presentation is deceptive. Some subjects naturally invite it. The mistake is using tone as a substitute for evaluating content.

If two explanations make the same claim with the same evidence, one does not automatically become deeper because it sounds heavier. Likewise, a speaker who appears relaxed is not necessarily thinking less carefully than someone whose delivery signals intellectual seriousness.

Presentation gives us information about style. It does not give us direct access to the quality of the reasoning underneath.

Complexity Can Hide Uncertainty

Sometimes people use more language when they are less certain what they mean. This can happen without deliberate deception. When our thinking is not yet organized, we may circle around the subject, introduce several related concepts, repeat ourselves, and continue adding detail in the hope that clarity will emerge.

A shorter explanation forces choices. What is the main claim? What supports it? Which qualification matters? Which detail can be removed? Those decisions can be difficult when we have not yet decided exactly what we think.

This is why simplifying our own explanation can be a useful test of understanding. If we cannot explain the central idea without relying on a large cloud of related language, perhaps the problem is not that the subject is inherently impossible to simplify. Perhaps we have not yet identified its structure clearly enough.

That does not mean every idea should fit into one sentence. Some subjects resist compression for legitimate reasons. The point is that complexity should come from the subject, not merely from our difficulty organizing it.

Sometimes the Detail Is the Depth

There is an important limit to the celebration of simplicity. Some differences disappear when explanations become too compressed. Imagine summarizing a complicated disagreement by saying, “Both people made mistakes.” That may be true, but it could hide enormous differences in what each person did, what information they had, what consequences followed, and what responsibility each person carries.

Likewise, saying “stress affects performance” is simple but incomplete if the question concerns why one kind of task becomes harder while another remains relatively unaffected. In that case, the details are not decorative. They are what allow the explanation to answer the question.

Depth sometimes requires staying with complexity rather than rushing toward a memorable conclusion. A good explanation therefore does not remove difficulty simply because difficulty is inconvenient. It removes what is unnecessary while preserving what the subject requires.

The Better Question Is Not “Is This Simple?” but “What Does This Explain?”

When evaluating an idea, we can move away from surface signals and ask more useful questions. Does the explanation identify something specific? Does it distinguish between possibilities that might otherwise be confused? Does it account for important exceptions? Can it be connected to observable examples? Does it help us predict what would be different under different circumstances? Does it acknowledge where the explanation stops?

A simple answer can perform these tasks remarkably well. A complicated answer can fail at all of them. The reverse can also be true.

Depth is therefore less about how much intellectual effort an explanation appears to demand and more about how much useful structure it gives us for understanding the subject.

Clarity Can Be the Result of Complexity Rather Than Its Opposite

Perhaps this is why clear explanations are so easy to underestimate. We see the final clarity but not the complexity that had to be sorted before it became possible. Someone may have considered ten explanations before identifying the two that matter. They may have removed terminology that was technically impressive but unnecessary for the audience. They may have found an example that replaces several paragraphs of abstraction without sacrificing accuracy.

The final result feels light because much of the weight has already been carried by the person who created it.

This changes the way we can think about simplicity. Simplicity is not always what exists before deeper thought begins. Sometimes it is what becomes possible after deeper thought has done enough work to know what can safely be left out.

Complex Language Does Not Automatically Make Us Sound More Intelligent

There is an interesting assumption behind some unnecessarily complicated communication: if an idea sounds more sophisticated, perhaps the person expressing it will also appear more sophisticated. This helps explain why simple words are sometimes replaced by longer ones, straightforward sentences become elaborate, or an explanation acquires terminology that is not actually necessary for understanding it. Yet making language more difficult does not necessarily create the impression we expect.

Research by psychologist Daniel M. Oppenheimer examined this question directly. Across a series of experiments, unnecessarily complex language was associated with lower judgments of an author’s intelligence rather than higher ones, and the research linked part of this effect to processing fluency—how easily the material could be processed. The study does not show that all complex language is bad or that easy writing is automatically intelligent. Its focus was specifically on unnecessary complexity. That distinction matters because specialized subjects sometimes genuinely require specialized language.

The broader lesson is not that we should make every idea as simple as possible. It is that difficulty itself should not be treated as evidence of intelligence. If complexity helps preserve an important distinction, it has a purpose. If it merely makes the same information harder to understand, the additional difficulty may contribute little.

We Often Judge the Explanation Before We Have Evaluated the Idea

Presentation reaches us before careful evaluation does. We notice whether someone sounds confident, whether their vocabulary is familiar, whether their explanation is easy to follow, whether the tone seems serious, and whether the answer resembles what we expect expertise to sound like. These impressions can influence how we approach the content before we have examined the reasoning itself.

This is understandable because evaluating an argument carefully takes effort. We would need to identify its claims, examine the evidence, consider alternatives, notice missing assumptions, and determine whether the conclusion actually follows. In ordinary life, we rarely perform that entire analysis for everything we hear. We therefore use many surface cues alongside content. The problem appears when those cues become substitutes for evaluating the idea itself.

A complicated explanation may deserve careful attention because the subject is genuinely complicated. But it should not receive automatic credibility simply because it is difficult to follow. Likewise, a clear explanation should not lose credibility merely because understanding it feels easy.

Understanding Something Easily Can Make Us Underestimate the Work Behind It

When an explanation is extremely clear, the listener may experience very little difficulty. Each point follows naturally from the previous one, unfamiliar terms are explained when they appear, examples arrive at useful moments, and the central idea remains visible throughout. Because the experience feels easy, we may underestimate how much work was required to make it easy.

Good explanation often involves anticipating confusion before it happens. The person explaining the subject has to decide what the listener probably knows already, which new concept should come first, what can temporarily be omitted, where an example is necessary, and which exception would clarify the rule rather than distract from it. None of this is visible in the final explanation.

We see the smooth path, not all the paths that were removed.

This is why clarity can sometimes conceal expertise. The expert may appear to be saying something obvious because they have already done the difficult work of deciding what does not need to be said.

Being Able to Make Something Simple Is Not the Same as Making It Incomplete

A useful explanation can often be given at several levels. Imagine explaining inflation to a child, a high-school student, an economics student, and an economist. The explanations should not be identical, but this does not mean the simpler versions must be false. Each can preserve the central idea while adjusting the amount of detail to the listener’s needs.

The skill lies in knowing which details can be removed at each level without changing the basic meaning. If removing a detail produces a false conclusion, the explanation has become too simple. If including a detail does not help answer the current question, it may be unnecessary at that moment even if it becomes important later.

Good simplification therefore requires judgment. It is not merely shortening. It is deciding what must survive the shortening.

An Explanation Can Be Accurate and Still Be Poorly Matched to Its Audience

Accuracy is essential, but it is not the only property that makes an explanation useful. Someone can provide technically correct information that assumes knowledge the listener does not have. Every sentence may be defensible, yet the explanation still fails because the listener cannot connect the pieces.

This often happens when familiarity makes experts forget which steps are no longer obvious to beginners. A specialist may move from point A to point D because B and C have become automatic after years of experience. The beginner, however, experiences a mysterious jump.

Adding more terminology will not necessarily solve that problem. What may be missing is a bridge.

This distinction helps us evaluate explanations more carefully. Difficulty can come from the complexity of the subject, but it can also come from a mismatch between the explanation and the audience. Those are not the same problem.

Depth Often Appears in the Distinctions an Explanation Preserves

One way to recognize depth without relying on complexity is to notice distinctions. Does an explanation separate correlation from causation? Does it distinguish what someone observed from what they inferred? Does it distinguish intention from impact, possibility from probability, short-term effects from long-term effects, or what is known from what remains uncertain?

These distinctions can sometimes be expressed in very simple language while dramatically improving understanding. “It could happen” is not the same as “it is likely to happen.” “I understand why you did it” is not the same as “I agree with what you did.” “This worked once” is not the same as “this reliably works.” Each sentence is simple, but the distinction prevents two different ideas from being collapsed into one.

Depth can therefore exist not in the number of concepts introduced but in how carefully important concepts are separated.

Examples Can Reveal Whether We Actually Understand an Abstract Idea

Abstract language can sometimes allow vague understanding to survive unnoticed. We recognize the vocabulary and feel familiar with the concept, but we may not know exactly what it would look like in an ordinary situation.

Examples create a useful test. If someone describes a complicated principle, can they show how it appears in a concrete case? Can they explain why one example fits and another does not? Can they apply the same idea when the surface details change?

This is particularly useful with psychological language. A term can sound explanatory simply because it has a recognizable name. But naming a phenomenon and explaining what is happening are different tasks. A useful explanation should help us understand what observations support the interpretation, what alternative explanations might exist, and where the concept stops applying.

Concrete examples do not make an idea less serious. Often they reveal whether the abstract explanation has enough structure to survive contact with real situations.

We Should Be Careful With Explanations That Seem to Explain Everything

Some ideas become attractive because they can be applied to almost any outcome. If someone speaks, the theory explains why. If they remain silent, the same theory explains why. If they approach, it explains the approach. If they withdraw, it explains the withdrawal. At first, this flexibility can make the explanation seem deep because it appears capable of interpreting everything.

But an explanation that accommodates every possible result can become difficult to evaluate. If nothing could ever count against it, how do we know whether it is actually helping us distinguish between possibilities?

A stronger explanation usually has limits. It tells us what it accounts for, what evidence would support it, what evidence might challenge it, and which other explanations remain plausible. Admitting those limits may make the explanation sound less grand, but it can make it more useful.

Not Every Complicated Experience Needs a Complicated Label

We sometimes assume that if an experience feels psychologically important, it must require specialized terminology. But ordinary language can often describe what happened surprisingly well. Someone expected one thing and experienced another. Someone misunderstood a request. Someone wanted two incompatible outcomes. Someone changed their mind after receiving new information. Someone felt disappointed even though nobody had done anything wrong.

Specialized concepts can be valuable when they add genuine understanding, connect an experience to established research, or distinguish something that ordinary language struggles to capture. But terminology should add information rather than merely make an ordinary description sound more clinical or sophisticated.

Sometimes saying exactly what happened is more informative than immediately deciding what category it belongs to.

Simple Questions Can Test Complicated Explanations

When an explanation becomes difficult to evaluate, a few ordinary questions can be surprisingly effective. What exactly is the main claim? What evidence supports it? What would be different if the explanation were wrong? Is this a fact, an interpretation, a prediction, or a possibility? Which part of the explanation actually answers the original question?

These questions do not require expertise in every subject. They simply make the structure of the explanation more visible.

If a complicated explanation becomes clearer when these questions are answered, the complexity may have been justified and merely needed organization. If the speaker cannot identify the central claim without introducing several more abstract concepts, the difficulty may be coming partly from the explanation itself.

Good Communication Can Change Depth Without Changing Accuracy

Not every audience needs every layer of an explanation at once. We can begin with the central idea, then add complexity when the question requires it. This creates a layered form of communication: simple enough to enter, detailed enough to continue.

For example, someone might first explain that memory does not store every experience equally. If the listener wants to understand more, the conversation can then move into attention, encoding, retrieval, interference, emotional salience, and different memory systems. The introductory sentence was not necessarily false because it omitted those mechanisms. It simply operated at a different level of detail.

This approach avoids two extremes: overwhelming someone with every available detail immediately and reducing the subject to a slogan that cannot survive further questioning.

We Can Ask Whether Complexity Is Doing Work

Whenever an explanation becomes complicated, one practical question is whether each layer of complexity changes our understanding. Does the additional terminology identify a distinction we could not make before? Does another paragraph introduce new evidence? Does the technical detail explain why something happens? Does an exception prevent us from making an inaccurate generalization?

If the answer is yes, the complexity is doing work.

If removing a complicated phrase leaves the meaning unchanged, that phrase may be serving another purpose. It may be stylistic, conventional within a field, or simply habitual. None of those possibilities automatically makes it bad, but they are different from necessary conceptual complexity.

This is a more useful standard than assuming that short equals shallow or long equals deep.

We Can Also Ask Whether Simplicity Is Hiding Something Important

The same test should be applied in the opposite direction. A beautifully simple explanation can be attractive precisely because it removes uncertainty and contradiction. But reality does not always cooperate with elegant rules.

Statements such as “If they wanted to, they would,” “Everything happens for a reason,” or “Successful people simply work harder” are memorable partly because they compress complicated situations into clear causal stories. Their simplicity makes them easy to remember and apply, but that does not guarantee that they account for the relevant alternatives, constraints, or exceptions.

A useful simple explanation should remain open to additional detail rather than collapsing when detail is introduced.

Clarity and Nuance Can Exist in the Same Sentence

We sometimes act as though nuance requires endless qualification. But a sentence can acknowledge complexity without becoming difficult to understand. “This may be one explanation, but it is not the only one.” “The behavior can be understandable without being helpful.” “A pattern matters more than one isolated example.” “Something can influence an outcome without determining it.”

These statements remain accessible because the language is ordinary, but they resist all-or-nothing conclusions. This is an important form of depth: preserving uncertainty and distinction without burying the reader underneath unnecessary complexity.

Clear writing does not have to flatten reality. In many cases, clarity is precisely what allows nuance to become visible.

Lightness Can Be a Style Rather Than a Measure of Substance

A conversation can be warm, humorous, relaxed, and still contain careful thinking. A book can be enjoyable to read while exploring difficult ideas. An article can use ordinary language without treating its reader as incapable of complexity. A person can communicate briefly without having thought briefly.

We lose useful information when we judge substance primarily from how heavy its presentation feels.

This is particularly relevant when different people have different communication styles. Some people naturally elaborate. Others condense. Some enjoy theoretical language. Others prefer examples. Some approach serious subjects solemnly, while others use humor to make difficult material easier to discuss. None of these styles alone tells us how much thought exists underneath.

Depth Is Better Judged by What an Idea Allows Us to See

Perhaps the most useful measure of depth is not how complicated an idea sounds but what becomes visible after we understand it. Does it help us notice a distinction we previously missed? Does it correct an assumption? Does it explain why two situations that looked identical are actually different? Does it make us better able to ask the next question?

A single clear distinction can sometimes do more intellectual work than several pages of abstract language. At other times, understanding genuinely requires several pages because the relevant distinctions cannot responsibly be compressed.

Both can be deep.

The form does not decide the substance.

Something Does Not Have to Feel Heavy to Carry Weight

Perhaps this is the more useful version of the original idea that lightness does not mean shallowness. We do not need to make every meaningful thought sound difficult in order to prove that it matters. We do not need to turn every observation into a theory, every emotion into a complicated explanation, or every useful idea into specialized language.

At the same time, we should not demand simplicity from subjects that genuinely require complexity. Some questions deserve long answers. Some distinctions require technical vocabulary. Some uncertainty cannot be compressed into a satisfying conclusion without losing something important.

The goal is neither simplicity nor complexity for its own sake. It is enough complexity to preserve what matters and enough clarity to make that complexity understandable.

A simple idea can be shallow. A complicated idea can be shallow too. And sometimes the deepest understanding is the one that has already done the difficult work of deciding what can finally be said simply.
